On the Universality of Mesoscience: Science of 'the in-between'

    Get PDF
The universality of mesoscales, ranging between elemental particles and the universe, is discussed here by reviewing widely disparate fields and presenting four cases, at differing hierarchical levels, from chemistry, chemical engineering, meteorology, through to astronomy. An underpinning concept, "Compromise in competition", is highlighted between various dominant, but competing mechanisms, and is identified here to be the universal origin of complexity and diversity in such examples. We therefore advance this as a key underlying principle of an emerging science -- Mesoscience.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur

Background Various Joint-preserving therapy (JPT) methods have been performed and tried in recent decades, but their results and efficacy were inconsistent and controversial. The purpose of this study is to evaluate its effectiveness and whether there are statistical differences in treatment between different interventions based on published RCT studies. Methods Following the PRISMA-NMA checklist, Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were searched and collected related RCT studies. The sources were searched from inception up to October 30, 2020. The primary outcomes including the rate of radiographic progression and conversion to THA and the secondary outcome -Harris Hip Scores (HHS) were extracted and compared in a Network meta-analysis. Results Seventeen RCT studies involving 784 patients (918 hips) with seven interventions including CD (core decompression), CD + BG (bone graft), CD + TI (tantalum rod implantation), CD + CT (Cell therapy), CD + BG + CT, VBG (vascularized bone graft), and nonsurgical or conservative treatment for ONFH were evaluated. In the radiographic progression results, CD + CT showed a relatively better result than CD, CD + BG and non-surgical treatment, the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) plot displayed that CD + CT (96.4%) was the best, followed by CD (64.1%).In conversion to THA results, there were no significant differences between the JPT methods and non-surgical treatment. In HHS, there was also no significant difference, other than CD + BG showed a statistical difference than non-surgical treatment only in terms of Cis, but the SUCRA was highest in non-surgical treatment (80.5%) followed by CD + CT (72.8%). Conclusions This Net-work meta-analysis demonstrated that there was no statistical difference in the outcome of radiographic progression and conversion to THA, also in HHS, other than CD + CT showed a relatively superior result in radiographic progression than nonsurgical treatment, namely, it’s maybe an effective method for delaying disease progression or reducing disease development based on current evidence

Effects of different physical activity interventions on children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: A network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

BackgroundPrevious studies have shown that physical activity interventions positively affect core symptoms and executive functioning in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, comparisons between different physical activity interventions still need to be made. This study is the first to analyze the effects of 10 different types of physical activity on children with ADHD through a network meta-analysis.MethodsPubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for randomized controlled trials on the effects of physical activity interventions on children with ADHD. The search time frame was from database creation to October 2022. Two investigators independently performed literature screening, extraction, and quality assessment. Network meta-analysis was performed with Stata 15.1.ResultsA total of 31 studies were included, and the results indicated that perceptual-motor training was the most effective in terms of motor ability and working memory (SUCRA = 82.7 and 73.3%, respectively). For attention problems and cognitive flexibility, aquatic exercise was the most effective (SUCRA = 80.9 and 86.6%, respectively). For social problems, horsemanship was the most effective (SUCRA = 79.4%). For inhibition switching, cognitive-motor training was the most effective (SUCRA = 83.5%).ConclusionOur study revealed that aquatic exercise and perceptual-motor training had a superior overall performance. However, the effects of various physical activity interventions on different indicators in children with ADHD can vary depending on the individual and the intervention’s validity. To ensure an appropriate physical activity intervention is selected, it is important to assess the severity of symptoms exhibited by children with ADHD beforehand

We introduce a multi-level parallel partition approach that not only partitions by dataflow and centroid, but also by dimension. Our multi-level (nkd) approach unlocks the potential of the hierarchical parallelism in the SW26010 heterogeneous many-core processor and the system architecture of the supercomputer. Our design is able to process large-scale clustering problems with up to 196,608 dimensions and over 160,000 targeting centroids, while maintaining high performance and high scalability, significantly improving the capability of k-means over previous approaches. The evaluation shows our implementation achieves performance of less than 18 seconds per iteration for a large-scale clustering case with 196,608 data dimensions and 2,000 centroids by applying 4,096 nodes (1,064,496 cores) in parallel, making k-means a more feasible solution for complex scenarios.Postprin

    Selenium‐doping induced two antiferromagnetic transitions in thiospinel compounds CuCo₂S_(4‐x)Se_x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.8)

A series of copper thiospinels compounds, CuCo₂S_(4‐x)Se_x (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8), have been successfully synthesized by solid state reaction and their structure and magnetic properties have been studied. The Rietveld refinements of X‐Ray diffractions indicate that both the lattice constants and the nearest neighbor Cu‐Cu distances increase with increasing selenium doping. A weakly antiferromagnetic transition occurring at about 4 K is observed in CuCo₂S₄. Two antiferromagnetic transitions at about 3.5 K and 6 K are observed in selenium‐doped samples, which suggest that the exchange couplings associated with Cu‐S(Se)‐Cu and Cu‐Se(S)‐Cu, respectively, are responsible for the two antiferromagnetic transitions. Detailed analysis of the experimental results further indicate that the nearest‐neighbor molecular field coefficient is comparable to the next‐neighbor molecular field coefficient. We propose a reasonable model to explain this phenomenon
